DR 79602 (and its kettle!) leads the Schweerbau HSM high-speed rail milling train.


Returning to the Sussex Rail Drain Train, DR 72211 is nearest the camera.


DR 72211 has been modified with a pantograph, for its work as an OHLE train.

DR 72213, formerly a Dynamic Track Stabiliser. Various tubes for drains work are loaded onboard.

DC 967615 is a rare YQA 'Parr' rebuilt from 1961 built Bogie Borail Flat 946146 in 1981. Once again, Wagon of the Week.

Aggregates watching at Romsey, week of 7th November 2022

Not so much change this week, no visibility of any JYA wagons.

The 22 JYA wagons, recently removed from service, have moved on from Basford Hall to Gascoigne Wood. from where it is expected that they will be removed by truck for scrapping. 35 to 40 miles to Rotherham or Attercliffe. It seems that the KEA wagons are there too, and may be for re-use.

"25 more JYAs to head North for storage on Monday (14th), 7M36 from Westbury, via Hereford and the Marches." - that will leave only 10 of this type.

Tuesday 8th November

66413 Lest We Forget 6O52 07:45 Westbury Tarmac - Chichester Recp. (Flhh), retimed to run later, on the day after a planned rail strike, with return after dark. The leading JNA wagon was 81.70.5932.574-3, the newest in the train, similarly a week earlier.

The oldest wagons seen were these 1998 Marcroft JNAs, this train working with VTG 3467 and 3428.

Thursday 10th November

66604 leading 6V62 13:21 Southampton Up Yard (Fl) - Whatley Quarry F Liner Hh. The 1998 Marcroft JNAs were VTG 3447, 3437, 3457 (not confirmed) and 3404; the newest JNA was 81.70.5932.515-6,  a group seen in previous recent weeks.

66514 leading 6V07 1341 Chichester Recp. (Flhh) - Merehead Quarry (Fhh). This train worked an hour late in the morning, but some clever signalling saw a return path from Fareham via Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford, to reach Romsey 2 minutes early.

The rake was a mix of Greenbrier JNAs, and also the 2000-01 Marcroft JNAs originally for NACCO and VTG. The newest JNA was one higher than previously seen, 81.70.5932.575-1.

Friday 11th November

Although not observed, another all-Greenbrier rake worked from Whatley to Fareham. This appears to be the bland, uniform future of the JNA wagon trains from the Mendips, after the current transition.

Mendip Rail KEA wagon disposal, summer 2022

Following the start of deliveries of the new blue '5932' VTG JNA box wagons from May, it has recently been apparent that the KEA wagons were no longer in traffic. These were originally delivered for TML usage from Procor in 1987-88, using running gear from former tanker wagons, and later were taken on by Yeoman.

In early June, the Mendip Pools contained the following, where JNAs 3160 and 3167 were visibly the same as the KEAs.

• JNA 3160-3168 (pool 718 = 1, pool 728 = 1) = 2
• KEA 3170-3246 (pool 718 = 15, pool 728 = 9) = 24
  

I have found a report from late July showing all 26 of these wagons were noted at Gascoigne Wood, understood to have moved north as a group of 20,. and later 6, via Crewe and Leeds. They could be for re-use - holding for  HS2?

This appears to show arrivals of 20 on 5th July, and 6 on 29th July. Location 16511 is Gascoigne Wood, 82201 is Whatley, 72024 is Wembley Reception - but no longer their destination.. All 26 are in my books.

Two trains, on 27th and 30th June were my final sightings of these wagons.

27th June, 6V62 13:21 Up Yard- Whatley, at Eastleigh

in order: 3243, 3244, 3175, 3178, 3167 and 3197 - all at Gascoigne Wood 8 days later. 6 seemed rather a high number for a single rake, and actions may already have been underway to gather the wagons together.

30th June, 6V62 13:21 Up Yard- Whatley, at Crampmoor
in order 3173, 3231, 3224, 3229, 3215, 3238, 3230, 3203 and 3206 - all at Gascoigne Wood 5 days later, this may have been close to being a final working, where  9 can be seen to be a very high number for one train, and with no overlap with that three days earlier.

VTG 3206 was the last in the train, and while I did not know it at the time, it was my last sighting of a KEA in Mendip Rail service.

The replacement of the JYA wagons then commenced, and conclusion may be imminent, as new '5932' boxes arrive. The 1998 Marcroft JNAs may then be anticipated to follow.

Other VTG KEA wagons remain in traffic in the Peterborough - Acton / Neasden flow, in the Calvert pool 762.

360112 returning to Cricklewood behind 47749, Shawford, 11th November 2022

The livery refresh programme for EMR at Arlington in Eastleigh Works has now been concluded, with 360112 being worked back to Cricklewood by 47749.

47749 CITY OF TRURO has the power on as it approaches Shawford.

The shell of 47811 was moved this week one two from Locomotive Services, Crewe, to Booth's, Rotherham, where disposal quickly commenced. 

47811 at Maritime, 24th July 2006. 47811 ran for Freightliner from 2005 - 2007, typically on Class 442 drags from Bournemouth to Ilford, along with 47830. On this occasion it was worked back to Basford Hall inside an intermodal working. Eventually stopped from the main line as it lacked OTMR. After this it spent some time as a yard shunter at Basford Hall. The scheme is First Great Western, with logos removed and replaced with Freightliner flashes, as it still was at disposal.

Mk 2e coach 3231 LOCHNAGAR (the BEN CRUACHAN name is now applied to 3344)

The train was already marshalled in the Works Yard, seen some 30 minutes before departure, with the driver in attendance.

Out of the Works and towards platform 2.

Both locomotives were transferred from Harry Needle Locomotive Company to Locomotive Services in February 2020.

D8096 was allocated to Eastfield when new in October 1961. Originally fitted with a tablet catcher recess.

D8107 is now named Jocelyn Fielding 1940-2020.

Mk2e FO 3231 LOCHNAGAR was built at BREL Derby to Lot 30843, allocated to the Western Region from December 1972. When initially sold for Railfilms usage, it carried the name APOLLO.

The load of sleepers was carried by a wagon type I had not previously seen. 31.70.4629.003-5 is a IFA sleeper carrier built by WH Davis in 2009, in a block of 50 wagons for Network Rail.

Similat DR 92616 coded as YXA(L), also by WH Davis, in 2004. This block of 50 wagons built in 2004.plus 15 in 2007, are considered to be part of the 'Track Renewal System' intended to operate with Matisa P 95 UK Track Renewal Machines in the DR 78801 series, but 41 were reported as stored at Kingmoor from 2015.. 

Previously sleepers for Westbury were typically moved on Salmon YWA wagons, which are expected to be retired shortly. It's possible that these sleepers were heading to Fairwater Yard, Taunton.
