North Yorkshire Moors Railway, 4th September 2023 - Part 2: 80136

BR Standard Class 4MT 80136 was built at BR Brighton, and entered traffic on 11th May 1956 at 33A Plaistow. It moved to the Western Region, working in the Cambrian lines area until withdrawal from Shrewsbury on 24th July 1965. In preservation it joined the NYMR stable in 2016, after working at Cheddleton and Llangollen.

Sister locomotive 80135 has been on the NYMR for over 40 years, and had a parallel career on BR. I have ridden behind it more than 40 years ago. It is currently under overhaul.

80136 brings the empty stock into the platform at Pickering, to form the fully-loaded 09:20 to Whitby, running to Grosmont where it handed over to 31128.

70009 is being prepared at Leeds for a hire to Colas. It appears to have been stored since summer 2016, and the last time I saw it was on 4M68 14:25 Maritime-Garston on 30th July 2015, passing Romsey.

Scrapping of YWA 'Salmon' wagons is under way, but some YKA 'Osprey' are still in use. YWA DB 996546, seen at Eastleigh on 18th January, was delivered to EMR, Attercliffe, on 27th October.

South Tynedale Railway, 8th October 2023, Part 1: The trains

A return visit to the South Tynedale Railway.

Barber, a former Harrogate Gas Works locomotive (T Green & Son 441/1908), has been through a height transformation since my previous visit in 2015.

22 Newcastle, one of a pair of battery-electric locomotives, the other being Carlisle. Built by Clayton for Metronet Rail / Transport for London, and rebuilt at the Statfold Barn Railway.

All other locomotives, and most coaching stock, appeared to be sensibly stored in the extensive sheds.

 LMS Class 5MT 5428, was new from Armstrong Whitworth, Newcastle in October 1937, and was withdrawn as 45428 from British Railways in October 1967.

Caledonian Railway Diesel Gala, 4th August 2023 Part 5: In the sheds

A look into and around the sheds at Bridge of Dun - which has been badly flooded in the week of publication - an update from the Caledonian Railway Diesel Group.

First thing in the morning, 20166 lies at the left, and D3059 (08046) was inside the smaller shed door.


D5301 (26001) lay in the shed. and I believe that 26035 lay behind it.


The doors to the new longer shed were closed by mid-morning. This shed is too long to see to the back, where some Class 20s lie. Visible here are D9553 / 54,  Ruston 458957 of 1961, and  12093, which was reported as working brake van rides on the following day.

Aln Valley Railway, 2nd September 2023

 

A visit to the Aln Valley Railway, where I took the train one way from Lionheart Station, Alnwick, down the line to Greenrigg Halt, which is well on the way towards Alnmouth Junction, and then walked back on the trackside path.

NCB Durham Area No. 60 (Hunslet 3686/1948)) arrives at Lionheart from Greenrigg. This Austerity tank ran on the Strathspey Railway, but is now too small for most trains on that line. I previously had a run behind it there in 1982. The footbridge replicates aspects of North Eastern Railway design.

Caledonian Railway Diesel Gala, 4th August 2023 Part 4: 20166

20166 is but a mere child, introduced new to traffic as D8166 in November 1966, allocated to D16 Nottingham Division of the LMR. Renumbered to 20166 in April 1974. Withdrawn in 1991, the locomotive originally went to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, arriving there in 1993, and then hired by RFS for Channel Tunnel construction, as '2015', returning to the Bodmin line. Sold to HNRC in 2008, this locomotive only worked on the Wensleydale Railway, where it was repainted in orange, until bought by a Caledonian Railway member in February 2023.
