56049 departs from Eastleigh Works, 27th February 2022

56049 Robin of Templecombe (new from Doncaster in October 1978) came off the works at 14:55, and moved into the East Yard, later ending up among the Colas locomotives in the HS sidings next to platform 3.

My presence was by chance, and I arrived to find 56049 ticking over, and receiving some attention.

66017 came into the works, to pick up a BG to take to Stewart's Lane, and Colas used the same slot to remove 56049, seen departing the Works gate.

Cable drum train in 6V41, Eastleigh, 17th February 2022

As 6V41 14:48 Eastleigh - Westbury approached, one look showed that the wagons were rather interesting - mostly a cable drum train, which had arrived as 6O26 from Hinksey, and which returned on 6O39 the next day, although this working was interrupted at Salisbury by Storm Eunice, and appears to have completed on Saturday 19th.

667638 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN passing through platform 2 at Eastleigh.

200493 is a VXA, a generator van. originally a VCA van, which appears to have been built to Lot 3832  at Shildon in 1974.

Of similar history, KDC950056 is a conversion to Lot 3907 at Ashford in 1977. The train included 10 of these YVA wagons.

The second VXA was 200879, formerly a VDA built at Ashford to Lot 3855 in 1976.

Not related to the cable section of the train, YKA 'Osprey' wagon DB996593 hitches a ride back to Westbury. Originally built as a 'Salmon' by Teesside B&E in 1958 to Lot 3065. These wagons are expected to be replaced by the incoming FEA-W series.

New Wascosa FEA-W wagons at Eastleigh, 17th February 2022

In 2020, Network Rail and GBRf arranged a lease from Wascosa of 570 wagons, of JNA, MLA and FEA-W (W for Wascosa) types, manufactured by Greenbrier - Astra Rail, which are now in delivery. Included in the order are 260 of the FEA-W type - "a modular wagon developed by Wascosa for the carriage of track panels, sleepers, switches, rails and loose materials" - which will displace several types including the YKA, YMA, YSA and YWA flat wagons, some of which have underframes up to 70 years old (Lot 2363, Head Wrightson, 1952). Maintenance of these wagons will be managed by GBRf.

This video shows a delivery run on 29th January, including two configured wagons (via LTSV News).

ORR authorisation letter for the FEA-W wagons, series 81.70.4524.001-4 to 81.70.4524.260-6, with full list of numbers, including check digits.

In something of a surprise, the spine wagons, which are the foundation of the system, have entered service in GBRf intermodal service, perhaps only this week. 10 wagons were noted at the leading end of 4M46 14:24 Western Docks - Trafford Park on 17th.

66762 arrives into Eastleigh with the yellow flats following the locomotive.
