Eastleigh and Southampton, 27th February 2011

08032 seems to have emerged from Eastleigh Works following repairs. This venerable shunter was built at Derby as 13044 in March 1954. Later D3044 from March 1958 and then 08032, the locomotive was allocated to 75C (Norwood Jct) when new, then at 73C (Hither Green) in 1955, 73F Ashford) in 1959, and 73C again by 1966. Withdrawn in August 1974 and sold to Foster Yeoman. It arrived at Eastleigh from the Mid-Hants, where it had been on loan, on 20th October. Seen here receiving engine repairs in the works on 2nd February. While the locomotive has been dual braked, it currently only appears to have a vacuum hose. Next location is not yet known.

No sign of 47749 outside at Eastleigh.
37417 slumbers at Eastleigh awaiting its future fate (DRS?). New as D6969 in March 1965 allocated to 86A (Cardiff Canton), later 37269 and converted to 37417 between May and November 1985. Stored since December 2008 and status changed on 31st January 2011 to "WNSO locomotives sold, awaiting collection".

Eastleigh, 2nd February 1997

47356 The Ghurkha at the diesel depot. In August 1996 the locomotive had been reallocated from Tinsley, where it had been unofficially named from 3rd June 1995, to Crewe Diesel, transferring at that time from Railfreight Distribution to Freightliner. In April 1998 moved into the Class 57 programme and emerged from Brush as 57001 in August that year. Now understood to have been sold on to West Coast (to be confirmed). To the left is 33021, now preserved, and to the right 33109 with its removed Captain Bill Smith RNR nameplate, now preserved at the East Lancs Railway.
73139 works on diesel power at Eastleigh station. Now preserved at the Weardale Railway.
37194 British International Freight Association is shunted at Eastleigh. This locomotive is now working for DRS. It was stored unserviceable in January 1999 and moved to Barrow Hill in August 2000. In October 2002 it joined the Harry Needle leasing fleet, and transferred to DRS in February 2005. In March 2010 it was the first locomotive over the new level crossing at Sheringham.

Forthcoming Bridge Works - Lee Drove

The bridge above is that at Lee Drove, completed in 1865, as seen on 5th February 2011, and scheduled for superstructure replacement between September 2011 and June 2013 to meet the W10 loading gauge for larger container traffic. The Test Valley Planning website can now be queried to see the project documents for all bridges and planned changes between Basingstoke - Laverstock - Redbridge, unfortunately its not possible to link directly to the documents at TVBC, but here is one at Network Rail showing some changes in plan for each bridge on the route. Between Romsey and Redbridge only the bridges at Ashfield, Lee Drove and Belvers (traffic lights bridge between Redbridge and Nursling) will now have superstructure replacment. Parapets will be 1.5m high, potentially impeding photography for shorter people, but the Coldharbour Lane bridge at Lee and the Spaniards Lane (Four Lanes) bridge will not be changed.

Station canopies at Dean and Romsey are also to be altered.

The new concrete arches will look like this - projection for Ashfield looking towards Romsey (taken in public interest from Network Rail planning application)

Update: The Wiltshire Council Planning website allows linking - here is the file for the New Road Bridge at East Grimstead, which was used for 29th January photographs below.
