A rare day, mostly related to engineering work between Perth and Dundee.

 

'Royal Scotsman' colours on 66743, 6K14 08:10 Dundee - Millerhill, passing through Kirkcaldy.

66431 Kingmoor TMD passing through Kinghorn with 6K15 09:00 Dundee - Millerhill.

66511 has all 10 'Octopus' YDA Skako Ballast Distribution wagons in its rake, passing Pettycur. "the Skako auto-ballaster set, ten YDA Octopus numbered DR92213-22 and built on the frames of Clyde Cement presflos by Powell Duffryn for NSE, delivered at the start of 1993. Mated with generator van DC210306 which was converted from a VDA van. The train was highly innovative for its time and allowed for remote-controlled discharge of new ballast and also precision laying around conductor rails, something that was difficult to achieve using manually-controlled hopper doors." The yellow paint scheme has remnants of  "Network South East" branding.

'The Solent Explorer', 40195 at Shawford, 29th May 1983

 

40195 1Z38 17:08 Eastleigh - Nottingham, passing Shawford, 29th May 1983. Working hard, with plenty of flailing from the leading coaches.

The long missing photograph was found in recovery after a plumbing incident at home, and will shortly be returned to its space in an album. There was an Eastleigh T&RSMD open day on Sunday 29th May 1983, and this tour was run, promoted by RESL (Rail Enthusiasts Society Ltd.) with entry arranged for the event in the tour tickets. A viable tour with only 7 Mk 1 coaches.

40195 was allocated to LO Longsight at this time, following a transfer from HM (Healey Mills) earlier in the month. The locomotive was new from English Electric Vulcan Foundry on 27th June 1962, allocated to Gateshead. It was withdrawn on 25th June 1984, and arrived at Crewe Works for disposal on 17th January 1985, where it was eventually cut up in mid-December 1988.

Alstom completes £25 million refurbishment of South Western Railway’s Class 458 fleet
458419 is still  at Widnes, awaiting a return movement, expected to arrive 24th December.

"Ian Yeowart, the godfather of open-access train companies operating independently of the Department for Transport (DfT), has submitted plans for eight new daily services each way on 100mph eight-carriage trains between the south coast port and Waterloo, one of London’s busiest commuter railway stations." Times article (behind paywall). Proposal appears to include Marchwood.

950001 expected to be replaced by a pair of class 153s.

34067 Tangmere has been repaired, and is again main line operational.

ScotRail contract documents issued to replace the HSTs, first objective December 2026, but more likely December 2027, and appears targeted at the anticipated Class 222s. At the same time, the elimination of passenger diesel traction in Scotland has been put back from 2035 to 2045.

08696, last at Eastleigh Works from October 2015 - 26th February 2016, was present, and pottering around in the yard. this locomotive was working for Alstom at Wembley.


08696 was new as D3863 from BR Horwich on 5th December 1959, allocated to 17A Derby.

5-car 800017 appears to be as in-traffic with GWR, noting the areas above the yaw dampers, but I have not identified the arrival working.

59003 was being prepared for departure at 14:30, to Westbury. 47818 tucked in the shed.
