Swanage Railway Diesel Gala, 10th May 2024 Part 5: 20302 and 20311

20302 was new as D8084 from English Electric Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn, Darlington on 12th September 1961. Later renumbered 20084, it worked on Channel Tunnel construction for RFS as '2002', in the 1992 period. It became 20302 in December 1995, when rebuilt for DRS. Stored through much of the past decade, latterly at Bo'ness from July 2020, then sold to Locomotive Services, who traded it with HNRC in May 2023. Repainted into HNRC colours, at Eastleigh, in April 2024.

20311 was  either 20102 or 20190, sources now vary, but most say 20102. New as D8102 from English Electric Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn, Darlington on 1st December 1961, later 20102. Similarly, it went to RFS for Channel Tunnel work as '2008'. Rebuilt for DRS as 20311 in April 1998. Transferred from DRS to HNRC in April 2011.  It was one of a HNRC pair, which brought 59003 to Eastleigh in 2014.

Class 37s at Eastleigh, 18th February 2024

37607 in the yard at Eastleigh. It had arrived on the Saturday morning, 17th February, from Basingstoke on a VST schedule.

The attached  test train was 96609 + 99666 + 72630 + 62384 + 9701.

37607 was new as D6803 from EE Vulcan Foundry, on 9th January 1963, later 37103 and 37511. Sold by DRS to Harry Needle Railroad Company in February 2017.

37409 Loch Awe was partially visible at Eastleigh Works. 37409 was new as D6970 in March 1965 and was later 37270. In 1985 it was converted with ETH to 37409 at Crewe, and sent to Scotland where it operated on the West Highland lines. Eventually EWS stored it serviceable in March 2003, and it was sold to EMR in January 2008. Shortly after it was bought by BRE for preservation and moved by road from Motherwell to SRPS Bo'ness in March 2008. Following BRE's failure, the SRPS attempted to preserve it, but it was sold to DRS and removed to Barrow Hill in September that year, returning to traffic in June 2010 and named Lord Hinton later that year. Sold to Locomotive Services in June 2022. A further example is expected to be turned out in these colours.

"Stuff" at Doncaster, 22nd May 2023

Wabtec's 08724 was originally built as D3892 at Crewe, and entered traffic at 64A St Margaret's (Edinburgh) on 1st Jul 1960.

Beilhack snowplough ADB 966099 was built upon a redundant Class 45 bogie, at the Ashford Crane Repair workshop in 1988.

47703 of HNRC has been an ETH supply for Wabtec, but has recently been reported as being  for sale.

73961 Alison was at Wabtec since it made its trip to Scotland in April, when it made two outings on the Caledonian Sleeper/It returned to traffic from 6th June.

70802 has been poorly for about a year. Wabtec removed and replaced the engine at Eastleigh, but after a short period in traffic in February it was picked up by 56113 on  1st March, and moved to Wabtec in Doncaster for further activity.

A Miscellany at Eastleigh, 15th February 2023

60 years old 37602 of Harry Needle Railroad Co. has been moved in the yard at Eastleigh Works, this may be in preparation for an anticipated move to the East Yard for road transfer.

A pair of dinosaurs. VTG 3453 was  the JNA wagon making up the consist of 6V62 on the 15th, seen under the Southern Railway Exmouth Junction Concrete Works pattern footbridge between Archers Road and Beaulieu Road and The Quadrangle, which was designed in 1924, and repaired in 1998 and 2012. There is a model of this classic design. A replacement was priced at over £1m in 2003.

VTG 3453 is rather younger, rebuilt by Marcroft in 1998 from 1971 built TEA tanker 82644.
