Exceptional Diverts at Romsey, including 69001, 4th May 2021

A signalling cable failure, with a need for replacement, closed the Reading - Basingstoke line at Southcote Junction. Many Freightliner trains did not operate, some trains operated via the Portsmouth Direct, and two STP workings were diverted by Swindon, Westbury and Salisbury.


Two views of 57305, working 0Y86 06:34 Oxford Down Carriage Sdg - Eastleigh, but running both late and diverted. The locomotive later did work 319009 to Brush, Loughborough.




66704 Colchester Power Signalbox + 69001 + 66794 0O69 11:00 Longport - Eastleigh.


69001 (formerly 56031, the first BREL Doncaster built example) has been tested on the Severn Valley Railway, and was being delivered to Eastleigh for painting.


Windscreen wipers have now been fitted, the loco was without these when on the SVR, and similarly 69002 at Eastleigh.


66794 was previously '29005' Ted Gaffney, while operating for HHPI - Heavy Haul Power International and later Crossrail, but the plates have been removed.

A final look at 66794, which is also numbered 92 80 1266 029-8 D-BRLL EMD serial 20038513-5, completed in 2003, and initially in service as '6610' with ERS of the Netherlands.

68505 a former Gatwick Express DMLV has been hiding in parts of the works for some years, pending disposal. Originally constructed as 61299, a 2-HAP (Class 414/3) DMBSO, to Lot 30452 at Ashford (underframes) and Eastleigh (body) in September 1959 for set 6101.

977988 (51413) appears much as when it arrived o 8th May 2019. A Pressed Steel Class 117 DMS, delivered in October 1960. From November 1999 used in water cannon unit 960301.

Class 317 disposal update - Eastleigh Works, 1st May 2021

57303 Pride of Carlisle close to DTC 77230 in 317659, which arrived on 25th March and was new as 317359 in March 1986.

73133 lies close to 317651 (DTC 77222 nearest), which arrived on 15th April. Originally delivered as 317351 in December 1985.

DTS 77205 of 317654, which arrived on 15th April. Originally delivered as 317354 in December 1985.

317669 (DTC 77284 nearest) is the newest arrival, on 29th April. Originally delivered as 317369 in March 1987.

In the Raxstar area, DTS 77282 of 317671 is the only remaining vehicle of the unit.

St Denys, 1st May 2021

 An interesting Saturday slot with three freight trains almost in a row.

70019 with 4O51 09:45 Wentloog - Maritime. Earlier at Severn Tunnel Junction and Basingstoke.


GERS 97774 was the only KTA in the train.


66192 leading 4O40 10:07 Cowley(Oxford) - Eastern Docks. Earlier at Basingstoke.


66096 was on the rear. Also seen earlier at Basingstoke.

66513 passing with 4O29 08:50 Basford Hall - Maritime. Earlier at Hatton and Basingstoke.

Dunbridge, 27th April 2021


One that I have not previously seen on Mendip workings, 66617 passes with 7V16 11:55 Fareham - Whatley. It appears to have arrived at Whatley from East Usk on 20th March, with some earlier visits from 11th. KEA wagon VTG 3170 was fifth last in the formation.

66526 Driver Steve Dunn (George) passes with 4M65 13:46 Maritime - Lawley Street.

59205 7V07 13:28 Chichester Recp. (Flhh) - Whatley Quarry F Liner Hh. This ran to Whatley rather than Merehead, on an unusual schedule, but departing at the more typical 13:41 time, and ran around at Westbury in the Down Relief road. The older JNA wagons were VTG 3417, behind the locomotive, and VTG 3408. A further picture of the working.

66743 continues on the Westbury Circuit, here working 6V41 14:48 Eastleigh - Westbury. The final OCA wagon was 112270.

66743 moved onto the Trafford Park circuits on 28th one two, which may be a preparation for its move onward to Scotland. 66768 took over the Westbury circuits, 59003 remains at Doncaster.
