Mainz and Frankfurt, 26th January 2000

A Germany trip straddled over a weekend, so S-Bahn from Mainz to Frankfurt am Main, where I did spend time looking around the city, as well as the Hbf. I had been escorted on travel by IC and ICE trains during the week preceding, from Mainz through Würzburg and Nürnberg (Nuremberg) to Regensburg, but this was business with a memorable evening in a bierkeller, so the camera was hardly out at all until the weekend.

Outbound flight on G-OBMX Boeing 737-59D on flight BD837 LHR-FRA. This aircraft, built in April 1991 came through the SAS connection with British Midland. Now flying as N732KA for Kaiser Air of Oakland, California. The return was on similar G-BVKD on BD838,  This aircraft was built in May 1992 and is recorded as being in the current fleet of XpressAir of Indonesia, registered PK-TZD, which was parked in June 2020.

101 070-1 built by Adtranz, the former Henschel at Kassel, entered DB service on 26th February 1998, remaining in service, most recently overhauled in August 2018 at Hamburg-Eidelstedt.

On a scale of awesomeness the 9980 hp Class 103 was an 11! The were rather battle worn by the time I was visiting Germany.

Here is 103 115-2 at Frankfurt, this locomotive was built by Henschel in 1970, and entered traffic on 2nd February 1971. It ran out of time on 27th May 2000, was withdrawn at the end of the month, and scrapped at Opladen in August that year. This Frankfurt based locomotive was the first orient red locomotive of the class, where the grilles were not finished in grey-brown.

402 046-7 a ICE 2 spare power car named Templin, delivered new on 25th June 1997. As one of two ICE 2 spare cars, this has seen interesting usage, including with ICE 1 sets and as part of the Eurotrain demo where it ran with TGV coaches in 1998. From July 2019 - February 2020 ran as part of an ICE 4 replacement "long train".
