29 years ago - a moment in Class 50 history

50041 Bulwark derailed at the mouth of Paddington station on 23rd November 1983. There was no loss of life, but many were surprised that the locomotive was repaired and returned to traffic. I rode the adjacent Hammersmith and City line on Saturday 26th November in order to get these pictures. These were shot on 1st generation VR1000 film which was grainy in daylight usage.

50041 was new as D441 to D05 (Stoke Division) on 5th October 1968, and was named on 8th May 1978. It went to Doncaster on 29th May 1981, and refurbishment commenced on 1st June, with return to traffic on 29th October. Following the accident, it was returned to upright on 25th November 1983 and taken to Old Oak Common, where it lay until 17th January 1984 when it was started its journey, by rail, to Doncaster. Repair took almost a year, with return to traffic following a Doncaster to Newcastle test train on 4th January 1985. The locomotive was withdrawn in on 14th April 1990 and broken up at Old Oak Common by Coopers Metals in July 1991.

Tugs and Semaphores at Barnetby, 30th October 2012

The Class 60 workings from daylight hours at Barnetby.

60035 passes at 09:06 with 6E46 Kingsbury - Lindsey oil tanks.

60035 has not been overhauled, only repaired, and was returned to traffic at the start of October, being noted as a yard shunter by 10th of month, then later allocated to pool WCAI (DB Schenker Industrial Class 60). It is understood to still have a coolant leak that it was stored for in 2009. After time on shed on Tuesday at IM where it was reported N/CLK (coolant leak), it then returned later in the day to Kingsbury where it is now reported to be failed again. UPDATE: Sent to Toton, then back into storage.

Overhauled 60017 passes at 09:43 with Scunthorpe - Immingham iron ore empties. 60017 returned to traffic only in mid-October.

60071 Ribblehead Viaduct seen passing Barnetby East at 10:23 with Immingham - Scunthorpe iron ore. Former Salisbury SWT unit 170307 is seen departing for Grimsby. While not overhauled, 60071 seems to have been a regular performer in the recent lean years for the class, although like many it has seen spells in storage.

60071 returns with the empties at 11:47.

60017 returns at 12:11.

60054 working light engine Toton - Doncaster - Immingham. 60054 was overhauled in 2011. Wrawby Jct signalbox in the distance.

Passing through Barnetby station.

60017 returning with empties at 13:28, showing more of the signals at Wrawby Jct.

There are now three lines between Brocklesby Jct and Wrawby Jct, and the down slow line appeared to come into use in the afternoon, possibly following a shift change. 60071 with loaded iron ore at 14:11.

The light was fading by 15:21 when 60017 brought the next load in. 60071 returned a few minutes later, there only being one train in the Scunthorpe complex at a time. 185138 is on a Manchester Airport - Cleethorpes TransPennine service.
